1958 Auto Union (early Audi) 1000

This 2 door pillar-less factory original right hand drive coupe is in lovely condition with the most gorgeous patina that only age, love and use can produce.

 

My mechanic, who has more than 50 years post qualification experience, asked if he could take some photos of the car for his album, as ‘she turned out so nice and is so unusual’.

 

When you see her badging, which is 4 interlinked rings, you will identify her as an early Audi, which name the company subsequently adopted.   Some people confuse the Auto Union with the DKW, and while the cars were similar, the Auto Union had a larger 981cc 3 cylinder two stroke motor and, it was claimed by Auto Union, as much as 37% more power.  I was pleasantly surprised with her power and there is no difficulty keeping up with modern traffic.   Iconic 50’s body shape and design.  Am I the only one to see echoes of her body shape in the early Audi TT?

 

This car is mostly original with even the original Auto Union branded floor mat.  We have serviced the brakes, welded and made good a small rust spot in the passenger foot well, made good some surface rust in the front foot well and the boot, replaced the right front track rod (no problem sourcing the part from Germany) and replaced the missing weather strip to the left back window which was letting in the rain to allow the foot well rust to develop.   We also re-chromed the front bumper and refurbished the wheel rims.   We have got the internal courtesy lights to work, as well as the heater, and repaired the boot lid stay, which was broken.

 

Known unattended to issue are the door cards, which could do with being refitted, the dash board clock no longer works, nor does the original engine temperature gauge (the car has an after-market temp gauge which is working).   The back seat and the driver’s seat have a blue stain, which we have not been able to lift.

 

The car comes with a raft of spare parts, including a complete replacement gear box and parts for the engine, all of which are included in the sale, which will help you keep this lovely car on the road for decades to come.
